Take, for example, a gray-haired Jew whom the British historian Timothy Garton Ash met in an art gallery while living in Berlin in the 1970s. Hailing from the Soviet-controlled eastern part of the city, she experienced firsthand not one but two totalitarian regimes. After a hasty departure from Berlin in the 1930s, she ended up in one of Stalin's labor camps, where her husband languished. Mr Garton Ash praised her in his diary; he later learned that she had betrayed him to the Stasi, the East German secret police.
