This is part of the oldest known group of mayflies. It was collected from a site near Hezhou in southern China by a team led by Zhang Qianqi of the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, and is reported in the latest issue of the journal Geology. Some 180 million years ago, during the early Jurassic period, the site was a lake where mayflies lived and swarmed to mate as they do today, providing a feast for local insectivores as a side benefit. These likely included small pterosaurs, but not birds, which have yet to evolve. Insects are rarely well fossilized in rock (although amber can), but in this case, fine anatomical detail of these creatures can be seen in mudstone solidified from lake sediments.
