The dinosaur is a newly described species, Changmiania liaoningensis, extracted from 123-million-year-old rocks in China's Liaoning province. With a spoon-shaped snout and a short, stocky neck and forearms, it was almost certainly a burrowing animal, like a modern-day rabbit -- albeit slightly larger, at 4 feet (1.2 meters) long. These rocks come from volcanic eruptions that buried millions of native animals. Yang Yuqing of Northeastern University in Shenyang and colleagues report this specimen, along with a second equally well-preserved specimen, in PeerJ this week. Since the original finds were made by farmers and their exact location is unknown, it was not possible to determine whether the animals were buried in their burrows. But their well-preserved state makes it possible.
