This collection of stone tools from Peru disproves the notion that in the ancient hunter-gatherer world, men were hunted and women gathered. Derived from the 9,000-year-old grave of a teenage woman, it includes seven spearheads and a knife and a set of scrapers used for butchering large animals. In light of its discovery, reported this week in the journal Science Advances, UC Davis' Randall Haas and his colleagues who discovered it scoured the literature of early burials in the Americas. Among them, the gender of the deceased was known and hunting tools were found in 27 cases. Of these, 11 were women. Two are recognized little girls. But now it seems that the idea that only men can hunt is a bit outdated.
