In the Florida swamps of the 1950s, a loud roar occasionally disturbed the tranquility of an alligator's habitat. Engineers at aerospace firm Pratt & Whitney are testing a new type of engine under top-secret circumstances powered by a strange substance apparently piped from a fertilizer plant in the nearby town of Apex. In reality, the town was just a name on a map, and the fertilizer plant was a ruse used to fool the Russians. The riots are the result of Project Suntan, the US Air Force's attempt to build a hydrogen-powered aircraft. It almost works. The engine ran successfully, but the cost of storing and delivering the hydrogen itself was too high to continue production.
