Bees in Asia are in a difficult situation. Unlike their North American cousins, where the bee-eating hornets have only recently arrived, Asian honeybees are relentlessly preyed upon by these giant hornets. The constant onslaught has fueled the hyperevolution of Asian honeybees, causing the insects to develop a variety of defense strategies beyond simply using their stingers. First, Asian bees build their nests into fortresses with small entrances and hard walls. They also hiss aggressively at predators as a warning that they are being watched. When that doesn't work, they can overwhelm their attackers with "bee balls" that generate enough heat to cook the wasps alive inside. Now, a study published in PLOS ONE by Heather Mattila of Wellesley College in Massachusetts shows that these bees have another trick: protecting their homes with dung.
