In December 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright's Flyer took off for the first time near Kitty Hawk in North Carolina, proving that powered-controlled flight was possible on Earth. At 7:34AM GMT on April 19, a small American helicopter called the Ingenuity proved it could work on another world. After a six-year, carefully planned flight program, the 1.8-kilogram spacecraft rose from the surface of Mars by spinning its counter-rotating twin-rotor blades at 2,400 revolutions per minute. It rose to a height of 3 meters, hovered in the air for 30 seconds, photographed its own shadow (pictured), and then landed again on the ground.
