These are the remains of a Homo sapiens baby, which the discoverers named Mtoto, buried in 2013 in the Panga ya Saidi cave complex near Mombasa, Kenya. At 78,000 years old, they are the oldest human burials ever unearthed in Africa. The group of bones on the left is the child's spine and chest; the one on the right, the skull and some vertebrae. They were excavated and analyzed by a team led by the National Museum of Kenya and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena, Germany, who published their findings this week in the journal Nature. Mtoto, whose gender cannot be determined, whose name means "child" in Swahili, is about three years old. It seems clear that the burial was intentional. The bones were placed in a circular pit, and depending on the arrangement of the bones, the child may have rested his head on a pillow.
