Today's electric car motors use powerful magnets made of rare earth metals. Not all rare earths are actually that rare. For example, neodymium is as common as tin. But good, viable deposits are few and far between, and many are in China, which has imposed export quotas in the past. This, combined with a lack of alternatives, makes rare earths very expensive, accounting for more than half the cost of such an engine. Yet almost nothing is being recycled -- the shortage extends to computer hard drives, motors in cordless tools and appliances, and generators (essentially reverse motors) in wind turbines.
