Using messenger RNA to create a vaccine is an unproven idea. But if it works, the technology could revolutionize medicine, not least by offering protection against infectious diseases and biological weapons. So in 2013, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (darpa) took a risk. It awarded $25 million to a small new company called Moderna to develop the idea. Eight years later, and more than 175 million doses later, Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine joins the ranks of weather satellites, GPS, drones, stealth technology, voice interfaces, personal computers and the internet, innovations darpa has at least partly endorsed.
