These images show January and December 2019 and January and March 2020 of Betelgeuse, the star that marks Orion's shoulder. They were assembled from data collected over several months by the Very Large Telescope's array of four instruments in northern Chile. Astronomers got excited when a rapid solar eclipse of the second-closest red supergiant star to Earth between November 2019 and March 2020 indicated that a supernova was imminent. Unfortunately, for those who like to observe extraordinary astronomical phenomena, this is not the case, although it is expected to appear in the next 100,000 years or so. Miguel Montargès of the Paris Observatory and his colleagues, who are studying the images, write in the journal Nature that the most likely cause of the shrinkage is localized cooling in parts of the star's southern hemisphere, which is associated with the ejection of matter. More massive supernova ejections will have to wait.
