In 1968, a tomb dating to around 1100 was discovered near Hattula, Finland. Little of the prisoner's skeleton remains, but the tomb includes two swords and a sheathed knife. Such funeral objects usually indicate that the owner was male. However, the skeleton was also decorated with brooches and woolen clothing more commonly worn by women at the time. This has led to speculation that a powerful woman, possibly the local ruler, was actually buried, rather than just the wife of a male monarch.
