About a third of Germany's coal, oil and gas, as well as most of its grain and chemicals, are transported via various inland waterways. About 80 percent of this comes from traffic on the Rhine, which winds its way from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea. It takes a lot of rain falling in the right places to push it up strongly. To reduce the draft, barges carry 15-25% of the usual cargo. Germany's most important waterway could remain closed.
