On the first day of this week, the French president spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at his residence in the Mediterranean. It was August three years ago, and Mr Macron hosted Vladimir Putin in the Mediterranean. Holding a bouquet of flowers, the Russian leader jumped up the stone steps to greet him. To the dismay of those who at the time thought Putin was utterly invulnerable, the visit confirmed that Macron's approach to Russia was at odds with that of much of the rest of Europe.
