Sérgio Olímpio Gomes, better known as Major Olímpio, is a police officer who entered politics 15 years ago. In 2018 he led the election campaign of the current Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in the state of São Paulo and was elected to the national Senate. He died of Covid-19 on March 18 this year at the age of 58. He is the third sitting senator to die from the disease. Nearly 4% of members of the upper house of the legislature have died in the pandemic.
