Democracy supporters held their breath when Nayib Bukele's New Idea (ni) party won an overwhelming majority in El Salvador's February elections. Mr. Bukele, Latin America's most popular president with an approval rating of 90%, has emphasized few checks and balances since taking office in 2019. On May 1, the day new lawmakers first sit in the legislature, concerns about the 39-year-old president seemed warranted. Parliament quickly voted to remove the attorney general and five judges from the constitutional division of the Supreme Court, which oversees most laws. Mr Bukele cheered on Twitter: "The people of El Salvador say through their representatives 'Release!'"
