In October, we took a closer look at Hikelandia's fate. In eight countries—Brazil, Chile, Hungary, New Zealand, Norway, Peru, Poland and South Korea—central banks have put inflation behind them. They started raising rates long before the Fed and, on average, raised rates more aggressively. However, we find little evidence that their determination was rewarded with lower inflation. Hikelandia's experience raises the question of how quickly monetary policy can control prices. Fed policymakers have been closely monitoring developments.
