Wherever the real market goes, the shadow market usually follows. In criminal activity -- as in legitimate economic activity -- the pandemic has fueled an online boom. The FBI's Cybercrime Complaint Center reported a 75% increase in daily digital crimes since stay-at-home restrictions began in June, with the number of complaints received in 2020 almost eclipsing the 2019 total. In a new report, Interpol, the international police agency, confirmed the findings and tracked the same trends in member countries. "Cybercriminals are developing and upgrading their attacks at an alarming rate," said Secretary-General Jürgen Stock. "They exploit the fear and insecurity created by the unstable social and economic situation caused by Covid-19."
