Neil Witte, from Kansas City, Missouri, holds a double major in Philosophy and German. But he said the toughest exam he ever passed was "Master Cicerone" -- or becoming a beer specialist, roughly equivalent to a master sommelier. (The word comes from the Italian word for leader.) The exam is administered by a Chicago-based company and lasts two full days. It includes three hours of written essay questions, a multiple-choice test, and blind tasting and oral exams. Mr Witter, who only passed on his third attempt, is now one of only about two dozen fully qualified "masters" on the planet. But there are about 4,500 qualified cicerones (who also need to take the exam in person), and nearly 150,000 who qualify as "Certified Brewers" through the online multiple-choice exam.
