According to Indian government calculations, every three and a half minutes a citizen is killed in a traffic accident. That's 150,000 people per year. But in all likelihood, the carnage was worse: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 300,000 people die in road accidents every year in India — more than in Barbados. This is not only because of India's large population. China has roughly the same population as China, yet its authorities count only 58,000 annual deaths. In fact, the World Bank estimates using World Health Organization data that India has only 10% of the world's registered vehicles yet is responsible for 22% of road deaths. This is an everyday massacre that takes place in public but rarely attracts attention.
