The reputation of London's Metropolitan Police was further tarnished this week. The Met has been plagued by scandals, most egregiously the 2021 murder of Sarah Everard by a deputy police officer. It has been without a permanent commissioner since Mrs Cressidadick was forced to resign in April. On 28 June, the Inspectorate of Police and Fire and Rescue Services (a police service) launched a special operation involving the UK's largest police force. That means the Mets will now face heightened scrutiny and must develop a remedial plan to address a litany of shortcomings. Underlying this vicious cycle is a continuing loss of trust in the police, both among Londoners as a whole and among victims of crime (see chart). Whoever is elected, the new commissioner has a very big task ahead of him.
