About one-third of Germany's coal, oil and gas — and most of its grain and chemicals — are transported via various inland waterways. About 80 percent of this comes from traffic on the Rhine, which winds its way from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea. As a result, concerns persist about hot weather that could cripple river navigation for weeks. The water level near the small town of Kaub, near the shallowest part of the Rhine, was only about 30 centimeters recently (see chart). It takes a lot of rain in the right places to push it up. To reduce draft, barges carry 15-25% of the usual cargo. Germany's most important waterway could remain closed.
