About 60 percent of the world's lithium—a metal much needed to make batteries—comes from evaporation ponds such as those shown overleaf in the deserts of Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. These ponds can be 60 square kilometers or more in size and are filled with lithium-rich brine pumped from the ground. As the ponds' names suggest, this brine is then concentrated in them by evaporation before being treated to purify them of other metals such as sodium and magnesium, with lithium precipitated out as lithium carbonate.
