In 1993, Joel Waldfogel at the University of Minnesota, when he examined the difference between the cost of seasonal gifts and the recipient's appreciation after accounting for exchange and setting aside sentimental value, found that "deadweight loss". Today, he says, cash spent on others yields, on average, 85% of the return of cash spent on himself. While gift giving can make some people happy, it is "a poor allocation of resources", he said.
