Bertrand Russell and the "China Question"

When the British philosopher Bertrand Russell arrived in China in 1920, he was overwhelmed by the reception he received. “They celebrated me as the second Confucius and invited me to tell them how their country should be treated,” he wrote to a relative. "It's a terrible responsibility."



Russell's observations are sometimes prescient. For example, he described "the most pressing issue in China's foreign relations is Japanese aggression". He also noted that the Bolsheviks in Russia "received warm sympathy from young Chinese students" and could gain wider influence.
