Philippines extends tariff cuts on imported rice, other food to fight inflation

MANILA — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s office said Sunday that he has approved the Commerce Department's proposal to extend lower tariffs on rice and other food products until the end of next year to combat inflation.

The revised rates approved for 2021 were due to expire at the end of the year, but inflation at 14-year highs justified extending the tariff deferral until Dec. 31, 2023.

Import duties on coal, the main fuel for power generation, will remain at zero after the end of next year but will be reviewed regularly.
