Six months later, with more than 600,000 deaths, the Oxford team is leading a race to develop a vaccine that could stop the pandemic. The vaccine has been put into production globally by AstraZeneca, a British-Swiss joint venture pharmaceutical company, and plans to produce billions of doses. But two key questions remain: is it safe? Does it work? The first answers are just emerging, as a paper on the Oxford vaccine trial, published July 20 in The Lancet, began in April with 1,000 volunteers.
