This image shows the aftermath 5,000 years after the merger of the two stars - although the light that created it took another 6,000 years to reach Earth's vicinity. It was published this week in the journal Nature by Caltech's Keri Hoadley and her colleagues. It is a composite of three images taken at different frequencies, two from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, a space telescope that operated from 2003 to 2012, and one from the ground. The blue area represents the gas ejected during the fusion process. The faint red ring is a visible trace of the resulting blast shockwave. Such collisions are fairly common in binary star systems. But this photo is considered one of the clearest episodes to date.
