Over the past decade, it has become clear that Neanderthals mated with the ancestors of modern humans, and that at least some of those matings produced viable offspring. The result is that almost half of the Neanderthal genome still exists, with a small amount interspersed in the DNA of almost all modern humans. (The exceptions are those of predominantly African descent, since Neanderthals never seem to have lived in Africa.)
