The silver lining of the Covid-19 pandemic is the speed with which an effective vaccine can be developed. Victims of other epidemics have not been so lucky. Three decades of attempts to develop a vaccine against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, have proven unsuccessful. The latest setback came on Aug. 31, when an experimental vaccine made by US drugmaker Johnson & Johnson failed clinical trials. One obstacle is HIV's genetic lubrication. The virus has a high mutation rate, which helps it adapt to evade the natural immune system and artificial vaccines.
