On the first day of this week, the French president called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky from his official residence in the Mediterranean. That was three years ago in August, when Mr Macron hosted Vladimir Putin in the Mediterranean. Holding a bouquet of flowers, the Russian leader jumped up the stone steps to greet him. To the dismay of those who already believed in Putin's utter invulnerability, the visit confirmed that Macron's approach to Russia is at odds with that of much of the rest of Europe.
